Get a taste of the Lowcountry in Bluffton
The best dining spots in Bluffton, South Carolina aren't always easy to find. They're often buried in strip malls, which generally don't have the vibe or views of the best restaurants on Hilton Head Island. But plate for plate, Bluffton can compete when it comes to tasty eats, as Jason Deegan discovered on a recent golf trip.

The Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes has been through a lot of turmoil since opening in 2007. Most golfers don't know that history and frankly don't care. They're more concerned about how the 7,300-yard, Tommy Fazio-designed course looks when they tee it up. Fazio propped up most greens, creating pockets and falloffs that make getting up and down a challenge. The results are impressive.

Hidden Cypress might be the best of the three golf courses inside Sun City Hilton Head community, but it's not the only one worth playing. Mark McCumber designed both Okatie Creek G.C. and Hidden Cypress. The new par-60 Argent Lakes gives residents a unique short course with undulating greens and mounding that give it a different feel than the other two.

Limited public play is allowed at Oldfield Golf Club, a private club that is among the best in the Bluffton area. Oldfield's Greg Norman design can hold its own with some of the Lowcountry's other top private playgrounds, including the Colleton River Plantation Club, Berkley Hall and Belfair Plantation.

Golden Bear Golf Club at Indigo Run, the only Jack Nicklaus course open to public play on Hilton Head Island, doesn't have a hotel to attract players. Relatively affordable greens fees do the trick instead. The Jack Nicklaus layout treats golfers to a pleasant tour of the island's watery natural habitat.

The views from Old South Golf Links are the best in Bluffton -- and better than most courses on Hilton Head Island, too. Five holes dance into Intracoastal marshes, and three holes end at island-like greens. When the tide seeps in, this Clyde Johnston design really shines. It embodies the spirit and beauty of the Lowcountry.
... full article »Rose Hill Golf Club in Bluffton continues on the comeback trail
Rose Hill Golf Club is the oldest club in Bluffton, S.C., dating to the 1980s. The club reopened its doors in August 2008 after a closure that lasted nearly two-and-a-half years. Saved by the Rose Hill Plantation's Property Owners Association, the course transformed from an original 27-hole routing into 18 holes. And it's on the mend, Jason Deegan writes. Along with improving conditions, Rose Hill sells affordability and a friendly staff to attract return play.

Hilton Head National Golf Club in Bluffton shrank from 27 holes to 18 in 2009. Today, the revamped golf course combines nine holes from the original Gary Player design that opened in 1989 and nine more that Bobby Weed added in 1995. The 6,730-yard routing still delivers playability, great conditioning and isolated fairways without houses.
