Tour the best golf courses of Bluffton, South Carolina
BLUFFTON, S.C. -- This Lowcountry golf mecca less than 10 miles from Hilton Head Island emerged when Gary Player designed Hilton Head National in 1989.
Over the next two decades, golf course real estate developments sprouted up like well kept weeds in Bluffton: Old South Golf Links, Crescent Pointe Golf Club, Eagle's Pointe Golf Club, Rose Hill Golf Club, Oldfield Golf Club, The Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes, the three courses inside the Sun City Hilton Head community and more.
These communities and courses brought golf retirees, tourists and transplants looking to escape northern climates. Fine restaurants, trendy bars, shopping centers and outlet malls accompanied this boom, creating one of the nation's fastest growing cities for a time.
The region's inland waterways make for scenic and challenging golf. Old South and Arnold Palmer's Crescent Pointe, in particular, use the wetlands best. Their cross hazards and dangerous forced carries thrill players. Playability is a hallmark of the Sun City courses and Eagle's Pointe. Oldfield is a former private club that offers a serene environment.
People no longer pass through Bluffton on their way to Hilton Head. They tend to stop and stay -- and play -- awhile.
